AIDS Walk Atlanta & 5K Spokespersons

AIDS Walk Atlanta & 5K Run on October 17th, 2010 will mark an important milestone – the 20th annual event to care for people living with HIV and AIDS in Atlanta. Over the last 20 years there have been significant advances in treating HIV/AIDS and now there’s a glimmer of hope that it isn’t an automatic death sentence. Even with these advances and hope, we still have a long way to go in our battle with this devastating disease. The five spokespeople for the 20th annual event, like their personal stories about AIDS, are so different, yet they join forces to remind us that AIDS is still a threat. There is no cure or vaccine and we continue walking and running because we believe that Every Life Deserves Hope.

This Year’s Spokespeople

Marty Mitchell
Mother of Brett Lykins who lost his personal battle with AIDS in 2007. Brett served as the youth HIV ambassador for AIDS Walk Atlanta for nearly a decade. Marty is serving as a spokesperson this year to honor Brett’s memory.

Craig Washington
An outspoken leader among people living with HIV, Craig has worked at AID Atlanta and Positive Impact and collaborates with many other Atlanta AIDS service and civil rights organizations. Craig has been HIV positive for 25 years and has been involved in AIDS Walk for 18 years.

Denise Stokes
Served on President Clinton’s HIV Advisory Panel and is an outspoken advocate for empowering and caring for women. Denise uses spoken word poetry, a keen wit, and a stunning passion to grab her audience’s attention, and doesn’t let go until her point is made. Denise has been HIV positive for 28 years, worked in HIV prevention for 20 years, and served as the 2008 Spokesperson for AIDS Walk Atlanta and 5K Run.

Robby Astrove and Danielle Arellano
They captured Atlanta’s heart and attention during their service as spokespersons for the 2009 Walk. Robby was told he was HIV positive at 16. Years later, after meeting and falling in love, Robby told Danielle he was positive. They remained together, marrying 3 years ago, and are a sero-disconcordant couple (Robby is HIV positive and Danielle remains negative). Their message is the importance of love and support when facing HIV.

Together, these five individuals will tell the story of AIDS Walk Atlanta & 5K Run as it commemorates its 20th Annual Event.
